Ingredients

Scale

2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
6 cloves garlic, peeled
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional)
2 tablespoons heavy cream (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place peeled potato chunks and garlic cloves in a pot and cover with cold water.
  2. Add a small amount of salt and bring to a boil.
  3. Simmer until potatoes are fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  4. Drain potatoes and garlic thoroughly.
  5. Mash potatoes and garlic using a masher or ricer.
  6. Add butter and mix until melted and combined.
  7. Gradually stir in warm milk until smooth and creamy.
  8. Season with salt and pepper, then mix in cream if using.
  9. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

Warm dairy helps create a smoother texture. Avoid overmixing to prevent a dense consistency. Adjust seasoning gradually for balanced flavor.
