Juicy chicken marinated in a sweet and savory Cantonese-style Char Siu sauce, then oven-roasted or grilled until perfectly caramelized. A delicious takeout-style dish made easy at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1½ tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine or dry sherry (optional)
  • 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Optional: few drops red food coloring
  • Garnish: green onions, sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Whisk all marinade ingredients together.
  2. Add chicken and coat thoroughly. Marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F. Arrange chicken on wire rack over foil-lined tray.
  4. Roast 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway. Brush with extra marinade.
  5. Broil 2–3 minutes for char. Let rest, slice, and serve.

Notes

Great for meal prep or BBQs. Use grill or air fryer for alternate methods. Serve with rice, noodles, or veggies.
