This easy sweet and sour chicken recipe brings takeout-style flavor to your kitchen in just 30 minutes. Tender chicken, crisp veggies, and a sticky-sweet sauce make it a weeknight winner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, cubed
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 23 tbsp oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (canned, drained)
  • ½ cup pineapple juice
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 3 tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for sauce)
  • Optional: green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Toss chicken with flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in skillet and cook chicken until golden. Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté bell peppers and garlic for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Add pineapple chunks and stir 1 minute.
  5. Whisk sauce ingredients in a bowl and pour into pan. Stir until thickened.
  6. Return chicken to skillet and coat in sauce. Simmer 3–5 minutes.
  7. Serve hot over rice or noodles. Garnish with green onions if desired.

Notes

Use apple cider vinegar or fresh pineapple if preferred. Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste. Swap for tofu to make it vegetarian.
