Sweet and Savory Sesame Chicken Recipe

This Chinese takeout sesame chicken is crispy, saucy, and packed with bold flavor. Made in one pan with simple ingredients, it’s a weeknight favorite that’s ready in 25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, cut into chunks
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 23 tbsp oil for cooking
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
  • Optional: green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Toss chicken with cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in skillet and cook chicken until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
  3. In same skillet, sauté garlic for 30 seconds.
  4. Whisk soy sauce, honey, vinegar, water, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
  5. Pour sauce into pan and stir until thickened.
  6. Return chicken to skillet and coat in sauce. Simmer 2–3 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve hot.

Notes

Use tamari and gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version. Add chili flakes for heat. Serve with rice or noodles.
