Chinese chicken on a stick features marinated chicken skewers glazed with a sweet and savory soy-based sauce, grilled or baked until caramelized and tender.

Ingredients

2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, sliced into strips
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Wooden or metal skewers

Instructions

1. Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes if using.
2. In a bowl, whisk soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, five-spice powder, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
3. Add chicken strips and toss to coat. Marinate in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
4. Preheat grill to medium-high heat or oven to 425°F.
5. Thread chicken onto skewers in folded strips.
6. Grill for 10 to 12 minutes, turning frequently, until internal temperature reaches 165°F. If baking, roast for 18 to 20 minutes and broil briefly to caramelize.
7. Rest for several minutes before serving.

Notes

Monitor closely to prevent sugar from burning.
Reduced-sodium soy sauce can be used.
Air fryer cooking is an alternative option.
